Fireweed House (Wilp Gisk'aast)
The Treasure House

This building was the original "Skeena Treasure House", Hazelton's first museum, which opened to the public in 1959. The success of the Skeena Treasure House in visitation and giftshop sales over exceeded its resources, thus, a new structure was required. Instead of building a single larger structure, plans for an entire replicated Gitxsan village were developed. The new facility would derive its name from the Gitxsan term for the life giving Skeena river - 'Ksan. During the construction of 'Ksan Historical Indian Village and Museum in 1969, the "Treasure House" was transported to the "new" 'Ksan site from its original location in Hazelton. The Treasure House later became the Fireweed House.

Fireweed House

Today, the Treasure House (Fireweed House) displays the various regalia used by the 'Ksan Performing Arts Group. Items on display include ceremonial clothing used in feasts (Potlatches), involving ceremonial blankets, masks, headdresses, aprons, drums, rattles, and so forth. During Friday evenings in the summer, 'Ksan Performing Arts performs at 'Ksan in the Wolf House.
