Tours

Each of these three houses demonstrates a different aspect of Gitxsan culture.

  • The Frog House (Wilp Lax See'l) - the house of the distant past, represents Gitxsan culture before European contact. The displays within the house portray the many different scenes common to Gitxsan village life before European contact.

  • The Wolf House (Wilp Lax Gibuu) - the feast house, presents the Gitxsan governing system commonly referred to as the potlatch. The word "potlatch" is not Gitxsan. The Gitxsan refer to this occasion as the "Yukw", or feast. The Wolf House illustrates this form of governance and its many traditional inheritance laws.

  • The Fireweed House (Wilp Gisk'aast) - the treasure house, displays the regalia used by 'Ksan Performing Arts Group. Items on exhibit display ceremonial clothing used in Gitxsan feasts; these items include blankets, masks, headdresses, aprons, drums, rattles, and so forth. It is important to understand that these three houses are only open to guided tours, and that they are not open to visitation outside of these times.
